Who not what
Often times it’s not about what is done but who is doing it. Yesterday the appeals court blocked Trump’s order suspending asylum access at the border. The judges said that the law gives people the right to apply for asylum at the border and the president cannot circumvent that law. During the Obama years, asylum seekers were turned back at the border in a policy known as “Metering” which led to the “Remain in Mexico” policy. Obama increased the use of expedited removal which involves rapid deportations without court oversight, including those who had legitimate asylum claims. Despite early promises to target criminals, ICE under Obama through programs like “Secure Communities” detained thousands who posed no public safety threat, including those with only minor traffic violations. This procedure went off with few problems because the cities worked with the feds. During the Obama years 3 million were deported most without a court hearing.
