For many years Palestinians and Israelis have stated that they would accept a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders. Note that says Palestinians not Hamas. Since its creation in 1987, Hamas has invoked militant interpretations of Islam to spearhead a Sunni extremist movement committed to destroying Israel. This is from the preamble to the Hamas constitution. "Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam obliterates it, just as ti obliterated others before it.". Because of the recent war Hamas has now changed its view. A top Hamas political official told the Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders. This is an opening for a negotiation.
