Immigration
In the past there were two reasons given for why illegal immigrants were allowed to cross the border. One group said employers, assumed to be mostly republicans, wanted cheap labor and the second, mostly democrats, wanted new voters. Not much could be done until the border was sealed but now reasonable actions can be enforced. The first step is to find and deport all migrants who have felony records. Second find the 300,000 missing children. Third set up work permits for the rest. The permit should be for five years, at which time green cards are issued for five years leading up to citizenship. During this time the US should still allowed an additional 2 million legal immigrants each year with the rules that they should be under age 35 and speak English. This will give them the best opportunities to find gainful employment. The problem of illegals crossing the border has been around since the 1980’s but became more serious in the early 2000’s with the rise of unaccompanied children and families seeking asylum.
