Small thorium reactors

China has a working molten salt reactor running on thorium. It has been in full operation since June 2024. It is only 2 MW but a 10 megawatt is under development. Most of the activity is in uranium power plants where a severe shortage is expected. Modern reactor fleets consume 180 million pounds of uranium oxide annually but mining only produces 150 million pounds. Add to that the fact that 70 reactors are under construction with 115 new reactors are in the planning stage. Once again China is out ahead of the pack as thorium is readily available in the waste of most mining operations. As the US moves toward small reactors the time is ripe to move to thorium. India with large supplies of thorium is looking for US help in developing small thorium reactors.
