SMR's

New smaller and more efficient gas turbines are now available to partner with small modular reactors to produce power for on site use. The turbines, like the reactors can be mass produced on assembly line and carried to the site on a semi truck. Each turbine can accommodate three 100 megawatt reactors. All those who promote wind and solar understand the need for back up power for when the wind doesn't blow and the sun doesn't shine. One of the big draw backs to wind and solar is that the site where the energy is produced is many miles from the use site whereas with small nuclear reactors the energy is produced on site thus eliminating the need for miles and miles of transmission lines. Current large nuclear reactors take up about 600 acres of land and SMR's with the same energy output take up less. A Wind farm of equivalent energy output will take up 200,000 acres. The future dictates that fossil fuels will run out and must be replace. Based on today's technology the replacement will either be wind and solar or nuclear but in the long run nuclear produces power 24/7 while wind and solar are intermittent. Wind farms require up to 360 times as much land area to produce the same amount of electricity as a nuclear energy facility, a Nuclear Energy Institute analysis has found.
