Oil production

I watch the President's virus meetings each day and several different reporters on several different days asked if the United States would reduce oil production like Russia and Saudi Arabia are considering. This indicates a lack of understanding of how the free market works. Oil production in those countries is controlled by the government but that is not the case in the United States. In the US when the price goes down it puts downward pressure on production and that leads to lower production. The President does not have to order oil companies to produce less as this will be the natural result of lower prices. It is similar to the way US companies have moved coal to natural gas for power plants. It is the result of economics not government.
