Deportations

The Trump administration is accused of deporting migrants before their asylum status has been adjudicated. They are deporting accused criminals without a hearing. The ACLU contends that all migrants are innocent until they have their day in court. ICE data from July 2024 showed 425,431 non-citizens with criminal convictions on its "non-detained docket," a database of those facing deportation proceedings but not in ICE custody. There are over one million migrants who have been adjudicated and found not eligible for asylum. Deportation Orders: An official familiar with internal government data stated in November 2023 that there were 1.3 million people with deportation orders, which includes individuals whose asylum claims have been denied. If these were ordered for deportation their supporters would claim they are people who have committed no crimes and merely what a chance for freedom. These things happened in the past without the mass protest of today. Expedited Removal: The Obama administration utilized expedited removal, a process that allows for rapid deportation without a hearing before an immigration judge. This gives the impression that this is not an immigration problem but rather a political problem. It appears that the standards change based on who is president.
