Ideas

Thomas Sowell, a well-known economist, says he started out as a Marxist and ended up a conservative. It follows the old adage that if you not a liberal when you are young, you have no heart and if you are not a conservative when you are old, you have no brain. Sowell enhances that concept by saying that the reason intellectuals are liberal is that they are all about ideas. It is when you go to put your ideas into practice, in the so-called real world, that you become a conservative. The liberals are the thinkers and the conservatives are the doers. This can be seen in ordinary people as well as new comers in the political arena. It is a lot easier to come up with a good idea than it is to implement the idea. A new idea may be judged on its merit at the start but it is soon engulfed in the viewpoints of many different people who all have different backgrounds and many have agendas. All intellectuals in today’s world recognize that the national debt is a problem but they cannot get together to solve the problem because of their competing interest. Even when most involved, agree upon a solution, they cannot implement it for fear that the other side might get the credit.
