Clinton
Wise people say you can learn from history. In 1994, half way through his first term President Bill Clinton lost 54 house seats and for the first time since in 40 years the republicans had a majority in the congress. Clinton then made a move toward the center and in 1996 he was reelected. He worked with the congress and balanced the budget, the first time in 25 years. He passed a tax cut and increased spending on education. He signed welfare reform limiting the time spent on welfare to five years. He passed the tough on crime bill and added 100,000 cops on the street. Democrats today are not trying to move to the center but are doubling down on the policies that have them at a 36% approval. It would be wise to consider what Clinton did.
