In recent years the country has witnessed the slow demise of the national press both TV and print. In the news today is further proof of movement in this direction. Paramount, the parent company of CBS, is nearing a deal to acquire Bari Weiss's Free Press and integrate it with CBS News Bari Weiss is a former main stream journalist who worked for, among others, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal and broke away to start a podcast called the Free Press. The number of people who "watch" or consume content from The Free Press (the media company) is over 1.25 million subscribers as of April 2025, with 155,000 paid subscribers. The outlet also receives over one million site visits monthly, and its podcast has over 18 million downloads. More and more people are tuning into Podcast for news and this is especially true of young viewers. At the same time the Cable TV news is watched mostly by older people.
