In 2010 the Supreme Court ruled that money was speech. This was the controversial Citizens United case. The result has shown that total contributions to parties have been close but in the presidential races the advantage went to the democratic candidates. In the 2024 election the democrats spent $6.7 billion and the republicans spent $7.6 billion while independents spent $500 million. In the presidential race Harris spent $1.1 billion while Trump spent $500 million. The money helped the democrats down ballot but did not have much effect in the Harris/Trump race. In any event the disaster that Citizens United was suppose to create never happened.
