The latest political star on the horizon is 36-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC). She is charismatic, photogenic and articulate and she has appeared on the scene at just the right time. Her schtick is as old as civilization. She will take from the rich and give to the poor using government to decide who gets what. This then allows those in charge to redistribute funds in a manner that will secure future votes and thus maintain power. The timing is perfect since the US now has the greatest wealth gap in history. Is a CEO worth as much as 300 workers? Is a quarterback worth as much as 400 nurses? Is a singing star worth as much as 500 teachers? Is a hedge fund manager worth as much as 600 police officers? While she spends much of her time denigrating Trump, her platform which is rarely mentioned, deserves some attention. She is for Medicare for all, a house for every family, investing in peace not war, rebuild union jobs and guarantee federal jobs, invest in rehabs not jail, offer citizenship to undocumented migrants, replace fossil fuels with wind and solar, educate students for jobs, support women’s rights with equal pay, free childcare and parental leave, expand protection for LGBTQIA and economic safety for the elderly. For most Americans this is a solid platform and these issues deserve national debate.
