Citzens

The Supreme Court’s 2010 ruling in “Citizens United” enabled corporations and other outside groups to spend unlimited money on elections. In simple terms it stated that money was speech and could not be limited under the First Amendment. The left leaning Guardian News said, The US supreme court has delivered a fresh blow to the Democrats, already reeling from their stunning defeat in the Massachusetts Senate race, by opening the floodgates to huge corporate funding of campaigns for or against presidential and congressional candidates. Since then, not has been said about Citizens United but results of the past three elections have been surprising. Election Candidate Committee Outside Money Total 2016 Clinton $580 million $363 million $943 million 2016 Trump $314 million $333 million $647 million 2020 Biden $1,044 million $580 million $1,624 million 2020 Trump $774 million $314 million $1,088 million 2024 Harris $1,151 million $842 million $1,993 million 2024 Trump $464 million $985 million $1,429 million Total spent in the last three elections by party. Democrats $4,560 million Republicans $3,164 While total expenditures have risen sharply, most of the increase went to democrats. There is not much opposition to Citizens United in the news anymore. The power of money in politics has declined as the number of voters increased.
