Drugs
The current push to bring business home as suggested in Trump’s mantra, Make America Great Again and Biden’s America First, should place special emphasis on drugs.
China, India, and Mexico accounted for 57% of all pharmaceutical imports by weight in 2021. Over the past decade to 2021, pharmaceutical imports have nearly doubled (increased by 89%) and increased by a factor of six in the past twenty years. Jan 9, 2023
Pharmaceuticals require serious quality control and the US consumer has little to no idea on how and where these drugs are produced. In a relatively short period of time, we saw scares from imported deadly pet food, toys made with lead paint, milk laced with melamine, poisonous toothpaste, and tainted heparin (a blood product). Bringing drug production home to the US should be a top priority.
