Policies
There were many writers and politicians on the republican side who left the party and went into obscurity. Just like Reagen destroyed the old time Rockefeller country club republicans, Trump as set aside modern conservative pundits like George Will and Bill Crystal and politicians like Romney and Pence. Trump is as close a third-party candidate as our two-party system will allow. Both sides of the establishment are in a dither and can respond only by denigrating Trump. The democratic party, which finds itself lost in the wilderness, continues to harangue against Trump instead of presenting policies that would appeal to the voters. It is not enough to be just against, you must also be for. Some like Dean Phillips and John Fetterman are making news by approaching Trump with questions rather than complaints. They ask what is it about Trump policies that seems to appeal to so many. How can we improve on them and still present the old-time liberal view point? We can embrace bringing jobs home, cutting the fat out of government, lowering taxes for working people and relegating cultural differences to the back burner. We can promote secure borders while pushing for a path to citizenship for migrants who are not felons. We can propose plans for a peaceful settlement to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. The upcoming mid terms will be about prices and inflation but it takes more than just complaining, it requires solutions. Best to start thinking about those now.
