Ann Applebaum, a long-time expert in European policy and no friend of Trump, was asked what she got from JD Vance’s speech in Munich and she was spot on. Her interpretation was that Europe can no longed depend on the US for protection and must set about defending themselves. This combined with fair tariffs is Trump’s policy toward Europe. In addition, NATO can no longer expect the US to pay most of the cost and provide most of the troops. The US can no longer be depended upon to act at the policeman of the world.
